Ingredients: organic tea leaf (Camellia sinensis) - roasted
Hojicha is produced most often using 3rd flush Bancha leaves (last harvest) which are then roasted in a porcelain pot over charcoal as opposed to steaming the freshly plucked leaves which is the traditional method of Japanese style green tea production. The tea is then fired at a high temperature, altering the leaf color tints from green to reddish-brown. This intense roasting process removes much of the tea’s caffeine and replaces the vegetative tones of standard green tea with a toasty, slightly caramel or cinnamon-like flavor. Because of its mildness, Hōjicha is a popular tea to serve during the evening meal and even preferred for children and the elderly.
