ORGANIC MACA, powder, concentrated 4:1
Botanical name: Lepidium meyenii
Production: Maca is a root vegetable belonging to the radish family that has been cultivated by the native people of Peru for over 2000 years. It thrives in harsh conditions at high elevations and is grown by subsistence farmers using traditional farming practices, providing them with a sustainable source of income in a region where little else grows.
Qualities: It takes 4 kg of fresh maca root to make 1 kg of maca concentrated powder (a 4:1 ratio). Because it is processed with the fresh maca root, this maca concentrate powder contains a minimum content of 1% glucosinolates, a natural compound found in many cruciferous vegetables which is considered a key ingredient in their health promoting properties.
Maca has recently been popularized internationally as a supplement and nutritious food ingredient as it is rich in lipids, protein, and a variety of sterols, as well as vitamins B and C. It provides plenty of iron, magnesium, calcium, potassium and iodine.
Maca is considered to be an adaptogen (or stress-adaptor), helping the body adapt to environmental factors and avoid damage from these factors. It is believed to promote sexual health for both men and women by balancing hormones and increasing fertility. Similar to the Incan warriors that reportedly consumed maca to fuel their legendary strength for battle, athletes today take maca to enhance endurance and stamina and boost energy to achieve peak performance.
Common Use: Maca has been a staple crop for the people of the high Andes for centuries where it is consumed cooked as a root vegetable or made into flour to produce bread and baked goods. Its flavor has been described as slightly sweet, malted, or like toasted oats. Maca powder is also enjoyed in functional food and drinks such as smoothies, energy bars, puddings, raw sweets and juices.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark place in an airtight container. Refrigeration not required.
Safety: We recommend that you consult with a qualified healthcare practitioner before using any herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing, or on any medications.
