Black poppy seeds are an oilseed obtained from the dried seed pods of the poppy flower. These tiny, kidney-shaped seeds have been harvested by various civilizations for thousands of years for both culinary and sedative uses. To some extent, harvesting for poppy seeds is in conflict with harvesting for opium. Poppy seeds of superior quality are harvested from ripe seed pods whereas opium is harvested while the seed pods are still green and their latex is abundant.
Qualities: Poppy seeds are composed of 6% water, 28% carbohydrates, 42% fat, and 21% protein and are a rich source of thiamin, folate, and several essential minerals including calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, and zinc.
Common use: the seeds are used, whole or ground, as an ingredient in many foods all over the world - especially in pastry and bread, or pressed to yield poppy seed oil.
Storage: Store in a cool, dark, dry place

CanadaNot quite organic
In a technical sense they may well be purely organic. I am am very positive that they'd been washed, however. They were lacking in flavour, plus unwashed poppy seeds have a light, aromatic, almost flowery scent, where these were quite odourless. So definitely processed, whether they were organic or not. Sorry to be negative but people need to know what they're getting when placing an order.

As a hungarian family, we often use poppy seeds in foods and sweets. This is a very sensitive thing, because the seed more often than not rancid, and then can't eat them. At home we bought on the market, but sometimes have to throw in the trash.... this was like a gambling, maybe good maybe not. Anyway I thought gave a chance and will try Omfoods's poppy seeds... Thank you, this is sweet, fresh, perfect. Smaller than usual, but perfect after grinding. The first order is over by week....
